Copper Ore:

Copper ore is any mineral from which copper is extracted, the main ores of copper are: Bornite, Chalcocite, Chalcopyrite, Cuprite, Malachite, Tennantite and Tetrahedrite.  Each type has its own chemical formula and percentage of copper when it is pure.

Several industrial types of copper ores are distinguished according to the mineral composition, the grain size of the minerals and the nature of their mutual interpenetration, and other factors. These ores are classified according to their chemical composition and the presence of copper sulfides, oxides, carbonates, or sulfates into the following natural groups: sulfide ores, oxide ores, and mixed ores. The sulfide ores, which account for 90 percent of the world production of copper, are the most important.

Copper ore is mined from copper veins and the largest reserves in terms of the extraction of copper can be found in USSR, USA, Canada, Zaire, Zambia, Chile, Spain Turkey, Hungary and Bulgaria.

Most copper mined today being an excellent conductor of electricity is extensively used for electrical wiring, cooking utensils, heat sinks and heat exchangers. Large amounts are also used to make alloys such as brass (copper and zinc) and bronze (copper, tin and zinc). Copper is also alloyed with precious metals such as gold and silver.

Presently, copper is used in building construction, power generation and transmission, electronic product manufacturing, and the production of industrial machinery and transportation vehicles. Copper wiring and plumbing are integral to the appliances, heating and cooling systems, and telecommunications links used every day in homes and businesses. Copper is an essential component in the motors, wiring, radiators, connectors, brakes, and bearings used in cars and trucks. An interesting fact is that the average car contains 1.5 kms (0.9 mile) of copper wire, and the total amount of copper ranges from 20 kilograms (44 pounds) in small cars to 45 kilograms (99 pounds) in luxury and hybrid vehicles.
